Product Reviews

For intelligent analysis, humor and a description on how one man learned and played the popular games of the pre-Hold'em and Omaha era, Yardleys book is among the best ever. If you like games like seven stud, seven stud hi-low split, with some wild variations including Betty Hutton, Dr. Pepper, High Hand and Low Hand with joker, plus home game favorites like Baseball, Spit in the Ocean and Jacks or Better with the joker, this is a fabulous primer. But it's the stories, the psychology of the game he presents, and the character Yardley that have made this book a classic. 140 Pgs. 1957

Review:
The GBC reviewer has it right, this is a really neat collection of 2 stories (one about poker in a pre-WW1 small town in Indiana and the remainder about a few months in Chunking China before the start of WW2) with a good beginner's poker education thrown in. If you know the value of hands the advice and hand analysis given in the first half should make you competent to beat all the cheap video versions of 5-card draw out there, plus your grandpa. If you take poker too seriously to enjoy this stuff then you definitely need it...
